Moving Winter planted onions
« on: January 15, 2012, 07:34 »
Hi fellow growers.

I planted around 60 onion sets at the end of October. Sadly only around half have made it through so each of my two rows are nearly half empty. Can I move them safely to be in one bed without disrupting them or harming them so that I can use the space for something else?

I reckon you'd probably get away with it.

Quite a few people start their onion sets off in trays of compost to give them a head start before planting out. The principle would be pretty much the same.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thats a good tip. If you dont have a greenhouse where is best in a house to start things off like this without them growing too fast?

If they have to be indoors, somewhere light and not too draughty.  Germination temperatures will vary according to the variety.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If you're talking onion sets, rather than seeds in general, I wouldn't bring them into a house, unless you have a really cool room, and then only to get them rooted.

They are quite hardy and would be OK in a sheltered spot of your back garden, (if you have one!).

Hi DD

Thanks for the many tips today, would growing modules be the best way for starting leeks too then?

You can, as said, but there is no need to be impatient, especially, as what you would be planting now, exactly?

They do not come up at the same time. ;)
