Help plz
« on: January 12, 2012, 20:27 »
As I am a newbie to the sight I need some help in organising my allotment!!!!!!!!!!

I have 5 plots to sow in and a wide variety of seeds to sow.

I need to know what I can sow in each plot together seedwise and how far apart do i have to channel the plot where I will be sowing seed potatoes?

The seed's I currently have are: -
Turnip, Fennel, Brussel Sprouts, Spring Onions, and all salad varieties.  I am looking at purchasing Leek and Butternut Squash seeds, seed onions and potatoes from our local nursery.

These are the measurements of each plot

Plot 1 & 2 -  8 ft x 16 ft wide
Plot 3       -  16 ft x 16 ft wide (this will be used to grow maincrop potatoes)
Plot 4       - 7.5 ft x 16 ft wide
Plot 5       - 12 ft x 16 ft wide

I am planning to grow onion orientated crops in one plot but need to know if I can sow fennel seeds with them?  Can i grow spring onions with them?

I have turnip seeds but have no idea what other ground vegetable can be grown with it.

Any help will be much appreciated as I did an experiment last year in our back garden and I enjoyed it!

A novice gardener and looking forward to getting seriously fit with my allotment!

The allotment is 16 ft wide and roughly 90 ft long split into 8 plots!

you could:

1)  group your onion varieties together (that is, spring onion, seed onion)  Leeks could go in this group, but if you are planting 1st early potatoes, you could wait until you've dug them up late June/early July and by then the leek seedlings will be big enough to handle and could be planted out in that bed instead.
2)  the turnips and sprouts together (but do note that brussel sprouts will need about 2 feet space in each direction to grow, and grow about 2-3 feet tall so make sure the others don't find themselves in shade and overcrowded - see if you can locate south and sow the turnip seeds on that side of the bed)  Please think about erecting some sort of netted structure to protect your brussel sprouts from pests such as cabbage butterflies (the caterpillars can do a devastating job on brassicas) and pigeons.  Sprouts need a long growing season so worth protecting early on.
3)  Fennel could go with the salad stuff.
4)  Butternut squash like all trailing squash are planted out about 3 feet apart, and needs space to roam so a big bed would be preferable and also grow more than one plant to ensure flowers have a better chance of pollination.

Not sure what you meant by "channelling" potatoes - presumably how far apart are the rows?  It depends on whether you have first earlies, second earlies or maincrop.   Maincrop about 2 feet between rows, 18-24" between plants, first earlies you can squeeze them in a little tighter say 18" between rows with about 12-18" between plants, with 2nd earlies somewhere in between the 2.

Hi mparveen,

i don't know how much experiance you have  :) but can i just suggest that instead of the onion seeds, which can sometimes be tricky, that you buy sets instead which are far easier to grow, plant them out March time.

Cheers

Tyvm for the above information.

Plot 1 will be 1st & 2nd earlies
Plot 2 will be Onion related
I have decided that Plot 3 will be the maincrop as I can get 8 rows of potatoes in there.  I will be growing Desiree and Maris Piper
Plot 4 will be all salady stuff
Plot 5 undecided

The other 3 plots mentioned are all occupied with trees & berry fruit!

I have been to our local nursery who has seed onions so it will be a stumbling block on onions!  They're currently being sold for £2.70 for 3 kilos!!!!!!!!!!

I can only try as we had a 5 ft by 12 ft raised bed in our back garden last year and thoroughly enjoyed growing the salady food.

I was extremely happy with the Maris Pipers but am on a massive project now!

One thing to bear in mind for the longer term, mparveen, is the question of crop rotation.

You are planning to use your 3 biggest beds this year for potatoes.  This leaves a very small area for each of the next 2 years if you decide to follow a crop rotation plan.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I have 8 plots on the allotment the 1st 2 are taken up by strawberries, raspberries. blackberry and white currant, they're a mishmash intermingled into each other!

My plan is to separate them from september onwards into rows and reorganise the plots into equal plots!

The 8th plot has fruit trees which I moved from our garden this year onto the allotment.  If the trees don't survive the plot is 15ft long and it will be fairly easy to reorganise that into the potatoes for that area.
