Poorly Hen?
« on: January 13, 2012, 13:25 »
Hi there
Anyone any idea what might be wrong with my blue haze - age approx 9months, laying well [including today] however she is moping about and unless my eyes are deceiving me, I am positive she looks bloated from her neck down, sort of underneath her chin area and down over her chest.
She wont let me pick her up, she is walking about ok on both legs and comes running when she sees me, but definitely doesnt seem herself?
Any ideas?
Worried Mum

Hi.  Does she free range because she may have just eaten something that's disagreed with her and may be ok tomorrow.  My other thoughts are has she been wormed recently with Flubenvet, has she been de-loused (I use Frontline), is she eating and drinking, have you checked her coop at night with a white piece of paper for red mite and lastly have you have a feel of her crop to check whether it feels soft and squigy, hard and impacted or 'normal'.

HI, thanks for coming back to me.  Crop is normal, underside normal, eating when I throw down but not scavenging with the others, just moping!  My hens are free range and we have an eglu so doubt there is mite.  She let me pick her up and started to have a chat.
I will keep a close eye on her and hope it is as you say thats she;s just eaten something funny.
Thanks

I had a similar problem with an hen a while ago, was fine, eating, laying but just constantly moped about so didn't think anything off it, Her neck / gullet looked swollen... she was fine so just left it as didn't think there was a problem.. a few weeks later she got worse and would eat or drink and just got weaker etc.. By then it was too late and then died due to gapeworm!!!
