problems pooping
« on: January 08, 2012, 07:20 »
Hi my Lula who we have had nearly 2 years, she was an ex-free range hen, is having problems when pooping she looks like she is straining and her skirt is down for ages, when she does go its tiny pieces, she hasn't laid in months and is eating drinking fine, she has more rests now and is slowing up but seems quite happy, I have bought some prunes to give her, will this help or any other ideas?

Do you worm regularly Sneezer?  I've seen chickens straining when they are badly infected.

If Lula is a hybrid layer from a free-range egg farm, she probably would have been 18 months old when you got her, so is now 3 1/2 and would have done with laying now.  My old girls spend a lot of time just sitting whatching the world go by, but they are happy enough as well   :)

Thanks for the reply new shoot yes they are all wormed every 3 months with Flubenvet, she is a lovely hen a massive golden thing, the other 2 she came with were typical dark brown and they have both died since so it is lovely to see her enjoying her long retirement. Hopefully prunes have the same effect as with the elderly!

Can't see just a little will do her any harm.  Hope she gets better, but if she's eating and drinking she can't be too bad  :)

Apart from her age, It sounds like she could be egg bound.  ???

Try putting some bicarbonate in there water or similar. Should give her & ur flock a flush out!
Just a suggestion.
