Whats been eating my Leeks
« on: January 01, 2012, 09:48 »
Hi All,

Firstly, Happy New Year.

Secondly, I pulled all my remaining leeks and some seem to have been getting eaten.  I have attached a link from my personal web space to show the image as big as possible http://www.hosting2u.co.uk/imagestore/IMG_1709.JPG

Any help is much is greatfully received.

Cheers

Alistair

Without a doubt.

It's a pest that has entered south England and spreading north.

There are no chemical controls available to the amateur gardener, so I'm afraid it's fleece or Enviromesh.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Give me a sense of humor, Lord,
Give me the grace to see a joke,
To get some humour out of life,
And pass it on to other folk.
Happy new year to you all xx

or cut them down to the ground when fist noticed (look in the Autumn) and they can regrow, so I'm told...they'll be thinner, but undamaged.

If the damage isn't too severe you could try leaving the leeks in the ground where they are and looking the other way for a few weeks.

Once Autumn comes and trickles towards winter the leek moth takes a break. My leeks (some of which were gonners) suffered quite badly. But... those that I left in the ground have grown on to become reasonably good. Dug some yesterday for dinner.

I did that this year at the results aren't worth bothering with - As DD said cover them or forget about growing them.

Wouldn't it be lovely if they did it in pastel shades with flowers on?  :D
