A choice has to be made
« on: January 01, 2012, 14:12 »
I am sitting here working our my plans for next years raised beds and I have run out of space so a choice has to me made; I have now changed my mind at least a dozen times  X12

I have 3 things vying for a 2' by 4' section of a sunny well drained bed

Broccoli (has anyone a favourite variety?)
Kale; Reflex 1 hybrid
Parsnips (which is the sweetest?)

 so I need your help!

You'll get more parsnips than broccoli, and probably more kale than parsnips, from that space.

If you've got a lot of other brassicas then I'd focus on parsnips.  If you've no other brassicas, decide which you're likely to eat more of / cost more at the supermarket.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I'd go kale as it has a long cropping period and is cut and come again.

You could interplant with a catch crop to maximise the yield from that bed.  The kale will take a while to need all the space.  Could you shift a lettuce crop or similar from elsewhere to give you space in another bed for the broccoli or parsnips?

If you go for tall kale, you can underplant with the parsnips.

And you could go for some small and fast broccoli - like El Chicco - that you can harvest before some June planting hot pot flower.

Give it full use! Nature doesn't do empty, either. ;)

Do you have a bit of flower garden space to spare? Put in one or two kale plants in there. Not only is it decorative, it will squeeze out extra space/veg for you and less likely attacked by pests who can't smell it past the flowers.

Indeed, some are very decorative. And pigeons tend to leave them alone.

Yes - I was going to  mention the need for netting if you're looking at broccoli or kale.  The parsnips on the other hand wouldn't need netting.  Decisions decisions ...

Our pigeons don't eat kale. :D At least something. However, they finished a lot of my peas, just before pod set almost down to the ground this year. I'm just so guessing it was them...
