Hi.  New to chicken keeping and since last weekend the owner of an 18 week old Sussex, Maran, Blue Belle and a B Nera. Have built a 6m x 4m run for them in the garden but intend to let them loose once they are settled. Have a 40 yard x 40 yard walled garden with high-ish walls (No, I'm not doing time at Her Majesty's pleasure) with fruit trees etc etc so they should be fine.

I have a question about lights. Is it worth putting in light to their house to compensate for the dwindling natural light this time of year? If yes, what type? Any replies welcome.

i dont but some do ,a 40 energy efficeient watt bulb on a timer is sufficient to make a day 12 hours long .pesonally id rather my birds didnt become battery hens and forced to lay       and welcome to the site matey

I thought about doing it because I thought it would be good for the birds .. but...I think I forgot one of the main reasons why we got them. We don't want forced eggs and want natural birds. Cheers.
