A squash storage problem
« on: December 19, 2011, 11:20 »
this year  :( They usually store much longer than this, so is anybody else having problems?

Went into the shed and noticed 5 of my winter squash, -3 Uchiki Kuri and 2 Sunshine, had developed rot patches on their outsides *sob sob*
So I've had to cut them up to remove all the grotty bits and the good bits are now roasting to turn into soup.
Only the Celebration and Thelma Sanders squashes left now.

Yes I have noticed, same with the spuds in store as well. They start to get condensation on them and go down hill very quickly. I have some squashes in the conservatory and they seem to be ok for now.  I have a couple of sizeable jam squashes, plus I've run out of jam, so I think that's what I'll be doing in the next few days  :)

All 4 of my butternuts had patches on them, also rot around the end of the stalk.
I stored them in the minni greenhouse in the back garden.

I used them all last week for roasting with chicken thighs, when i began to cut them back i found the rot had gone quite far into them to the point i had to throw away one of the big ones and half of the medium ones.  :(

Got enough for the meal thoutgh.

I've taken the advice given and washed ours over with a weak bleach solution.   Seems to be doing the trick - up to now.   Touch wood.     Cheers,     Tony.

I had some small Red Kuris go quickly on me. Haven't checked on the larger ones in my storage room, so a job in the next day or so.

Mine are Ok so far.

They are indoors so they don't get any condensation on them at all, as the temperature is fairly constant

Wonder if that is why

One of mine started to go on the stalk end. (Potimarron type) Rapidly turned into soup at the weekend.

My fault I think as I left them on the table outside.  It is undercover but the damp weather wouldn't have helped.  The little festival types seem ok at the moment but they've all been brought indoors on a windowsill.
