[Hobnails]

I've just planted Griselle sets this afternoon.
I also grow Red Sun, but have found these are best planted in March, as I've found they tend to bolt if planted any earlier.

They're going in raised beds cleared of salad that went in after carrots.
I've put an inch of compost over the bed and will dress with wood ash in January.
If they need a boost once they get going properly next Spring I'll rake in some chicken manure pellets.

I'm watching out for onion rot in the alliums this year. It turned up for the first time in a  new raised bed I built and planted my garlic. Lost most of the crop. I bought in some municipal compost to help fill the bed and I'm blaming that for the disease. But who knows where it came from.

It is tradition to plant on the shortest day, that is this Wednesday.

Some years the soil is cold and they take a long time to get going and you might as well wait until February. They are however happy to sit there and do not rot or suffer from hard frost.

This week we are due for a warm spell, up to 10 degrees by Christmas, so this year it might just be the right thing to do.
