Epileptic chicken?
« on: October 08, 2007, 20:21 »
Hi, this afternoon I was called into the house by my daughter to find Polly (a 10 month old Sultan hen), laid on her side flat out.  I picked her up and she was completely floppy and I thought she was dead.

I sat down and was checking her over for any signs of trauma when she slowly came round (about 10 min).

Eventually she got off my knee and suttled out of the house into her hen house and refused to come out (in the meantime laying a egg)

After a while I was getting very concerned as she wouldn't come out (she usually does not long after laying), brought her in house so I could keep an eye on her, she appeared out of sorts & sleepy.

Took to vet who reckoned she was physically in very good condition (she also seemed perkier), and he said maybe she was epileptic!  As no obvious signs of illness or anything.

Home from vets and off she pottered straight into hen house!

She has been a bit odd over weekend, I found her asleep on the doormat yesterday, other than this she was a normal healthy hen up to the moment I found her.

Any ideas anyone?

Hi Munty they do get green cabbage almost daily, I've tried them with black kale before and they wouldn't touch it, awkard b*ggers (i love it), not tried spinach though, you reckon it could be iron even with all the cabbage they get?

some minerals are removed by using other minerals calcium dilutes something cant think what . to much iron is as bad as not enough ,, but as for a diagnosis i cant offer it  but with a sleepy bird id look for an iron shortage,, mineral supplement will boost the others  some chemist type on here may be able to help with the mineral thing   :)
