silkie hen not feeling good???
« on: November 18, 2011, 05:30 »
My 1 1/2 year old silkie hen, Maddie, isn't feeling well. I noticed her this morning, just not herself. As I watched her all day, she seemed to not be very mobile, not really able to sit well either. when she did sit, she would puff up. this evening I have brought her in the house in a basket, I checked to see if she was bound. it doesn't seem so to me, but I don;t have alot of experience with that. Now that she is in her basket, nice and warm, she hunkered down, and seems quite relaxed.
Anyone have any advise? She is such a sweeite and I don't want to lose her....
help.....

Hi,
So sorry to hear about Maddie, I hope she is feeling better.

I probably wont be much help but I hate it when nobody replies, probably because it is difficult tospeculate what could be wrong.

When was she last wormed, and did you use Flubenvet?
Has she ever layed a soft egg without a shell?
Also does her croup feel ok, best to check first thing.
Have any new birds been introduced recently?

If she is still unwell you may have to think about a trip to the vet  :(

Hope all goes well

I had a light sussex that was ill for a day and I think she probably just ate something in the garden that she shouldn't have.  Try to get your silkie to eat and drink something if you can and hopefully by tomorrow she will be back to her normal self.  If not a visit to the vet might be in order.

HI, thank you for the replies, I appreciate the responses.
So I ended up taking Maddie to my vet. she had a bacterial infection, causing diahrea, and most likely would have been death. I brought her in the house for a few days of antibiotic treatment...kept her warm and gave her warm oatmeal with her meds in it so she would eat it.. Also pedialite to help with dehydration from the diahrea.
After a few days she was well enought o go back outside.
The vet said it is really important to catch this at the first sign of it because it can wipe out all your birds very quickly.
So I also gave the other 3 birds that she is close to the medication for a few days.
Everyone is fine now...
Thanks again for the support...

thanks for updating us and also for letting everybody know what medication she was given - it could help others in the same situation.
Glad she has made a full recovery  ;)
Staffies are softer than you think.
