Disappearing prolapse
« on: December 13, 2011, 12:41 »
Need some advice please  :)

Yoda my little Serama hen is around 1 year old and is laying regularly even now this late in the year.  They were out in the garden for a run while I cleaned them out and I noticed her picking round her rear end.

When I picked her up I saw what I thought was a prolapse - not massive and her rear end is dry, but was concerned so brought her in and put her in a box while I finished cleaning out.

I've come back in and the prolapse has dissapeared and she is tucking into a dish of layers pellts like nothing happened.  She's totally unconcerned about being inside on her own as she prefers people to chickens, so I'm tempted to keep her in and just keep an eye of her for a day or so, but don't want to mess with her if she doesn't need it.

it sounds like she is lucky and it has shrunk back on it's own. I would let her back out with her friends. Next time it happens you could try putting some germaloids or similar to help shrink it, but always keep her in a warm, dark and quiet place to help stop her laying until it has gone  :) .
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks Joy  :)

I thought she may be straining with an egg so tried the sitting her in warm water treatment.  I had her in my hand with my fingers under her belly and legs in case she took off.  After initial nervousness, she loved it.  Nestled her breast into my palm, lifted her legs up and was dozing off with the bliss of the warm water.  I can't feel an egg and she's back in her box preening her wet feathers now.  Her vent looks totally normal and she's perfectly bright and happy.

She's had a couple of poohs and they look fine, but she's a bit wet so may keep her in tonight and see how she is in the morning.

I've got the laundry basket handy to make a roof on her box so she's contained, but apart from sitting on the edge watching telly, she's content to sit in there muching her pellets and preening.  I starting to think it was some cunning chicky plot to get inside the house  ;)

Wonderful photo.

You can dry her feathers with a hairdryer on the warm setting.  I did this with one of our birds and she fell asleep with pleasure.  I thought she'd died !!

I did wonder when Yoda started closing her eyes while sitting in the sink in her warm bath, but she was just blissed out.

She has since done a pooh with what could be a piece of worm in it.  They were wormed 3 months ago but they do get to free range so am going to start with the Flubenvet tomorrow for them all.

Yoda is asleep in her box now.  I've chucked my work fleece over the laundry basket to give her a warm dark place to be.  Can't get over how relaxed she is.  Like she spends every day in the house

Lovely story and photo, New Shoot.  You'd better watch out or she will expect to come inside every day and have a TV dinner!

I also have a box with a laundry basket that fits nicely on top - it makes the perfect temporary home for a sick chick (or a crook chook as we call it in NZ).  I can recommend having something like this handy as you never know when you might need it.

Good luck to Yoda for a full recovery.

Yoda went back into the coop this morning early on before it got light and they were let out.  Seems fine and is snuggled up tonight next to one of her friends.

Unfortunately it's dark when I leave and get back, but OH was back earlier and said she seemed fine.  Well, except that they are now being wormed and he's banned from giving afternoon treats, which did not go down well with Madam
