How do I use my tea mountain?
« on: December 05, 2011, 17:12 »
Hi Everyone

Having read on this forum that my used tea bags can be used to make soil more acidic I have been saving them all up and now have a mountain (slight exaggeration but I do drink ALOT of tea).

I want to make a raised bed on my allotment to grow blueberries and I know they like acidic soil, what's my best approach to this?  Do I just mix the tea in with the soil and compost?  Or should I put the tea leaves around the base of each bush?  Is it possible to give the blueberries too much tea??

Any advice greatly received but please don't tell me off about my tea drinking, it's my only vice  :D

Bag or leaf ?  If bag, not all bage decompose and lay around looking unsightly.  If leaf, I should dig it in but also dig in some ericacious ! compost as well.     Cheers,     Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Thanks Tony.  I use tea bags but i've been opening and emptying them into a tub.  Do you think it is possible to add too much tea???  Seriously I get through about 15-20 mugs a day, so it's really building up

You can always put some of it in the compost bin too.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I just put the used teabags straight in the compost bin.

Adding the tea to the compost the blue berries are in will help acidify it, and tbh I don't think you could overdo it --- the compost will not be lower than the pH of the used tealeaves themselves, which would not be too low for blueberies to cope with.

Hope that helps  :)

I just compost tea bags with all the kitchen waste in the dalek bin. That way you get a balanced finished compost. Some tea bags never seem to decompose though but I just push the back under the soil if I see them  :)
