Hi Everyone,

I have recently just acquired a plot and fairly new to it all and wondering what other people do at this time of year ? Should we be double digging and preparing the ground with manure for spring?

All of the above along with getting rid of perennial weeds and general tidying and planning your crop rotation for next year, not everywhere will need double digging though depends on soil type and wether it's been recently cultivated. Plenty to keep you busy before the spring though. Enjoy.

Yeah i have been doing that of late and the soil is quite good and easy to turn over.
Not tested the soil yet.

I only double dig now when I dig the trenches for the spuds so that in 4 years most of the plot is done.

I think few people double dig any more, it's too much like hard work

I tend to dig/fork over over the top spit, but I do push the fork into the under layer and wiggle it about, to help break it up a bit, and improve drainage

I too have a new plot and started last week to do some digging. A little bit each time and before you know it'll be all ship shape ready for the beggering weeds  to start growing again in the Spring. Hee hee!
