There's something that's always puzzled me, and I wondered if anyone here had the answer to it. If I buy a pot basil from the supermarket and put it on the kitchen windowsill, it's fine. If I grow basil from seed and put it on the same windowsill, it's instantly smothered in those icky little flies. It's clearly a different variety, because the homegrown stuff has much bigger leaves. But is that the answer, that some varieties are more susceptible? If so, does anybody know what the supermarket variety is?

Though I do not know the answer, I would suspect, it rather has to do with when, what soil, etc. you do this with, than the actual variety.

Icky little flies are fungus gnats in the compost, I suspect,

The supermarket pots are probably watered with 'something' that stops the little blighters.

There are many varieties of Basil, however, and some do indeed have smaller leaves
