I have a large heated propagator in the greenhouse. Does it make any sense to start off slow growing things like Leek now? Is there a chance that they'll simply go to seed mid-summer if I do and is there any way of preventing this?

I believe there is a good chance of the leeks going to seed mid summer.  You could try starting them off in the propagor early then bringing them out a tad earlier than you would to slow them up a bit.    This is the problem of attempting to extend the growing season.            Cheers,    Tony.

Yes, I just checked on one of those monster veg sites. They are selling show-leek seedlings now so those guys must have it figured on how to stop early seeding. Can it all boil down to leek varieties?

I dont think so mate, I have grown the same flavour for years, normaly only a few go to seed with my method, this year nearly all have, I would say it must be down climate and control of climate or even the soil itself  , perhaps these big leek growers move their leeks around in big pipes
