Question on moving apple trees.
« on: November 21, 2011, 16:28 »
On the plot I took over in summer are 4 small apple trees which are planted in a silly place right on the edge of the main path and in between raised beds  :nowink:

I plan on moving them possibly this week as they are interfering with my replanning of the plot. Now then as of now Im not sure where they are going to finish up going so ideally I'd like to dig them up with as much root as possible and store them in tubs over winter until spring when i may have some sort of real idea where they are going. Does this sound feasible and will they be ok to plant out in spring or should I really plan where they are going now and jsut move them directly.

thanks
R.I.P Bobby Smiler Smith......love you always little fella.

you can heal them in over winter [ plant them in  a spare  piece of land ] as long  you replant them in thier final location or tub by spring.

I agree - now is a good time to move fruit trees, and as long as the roots don't dry out at all  :D

Any time while they're dormant is a good time to move them, so you've got 3 months at least to decide where they are going, before you need to dig them up.
IMO It will be much less of a shock to their systems if you move them only once.

lifting fruit now is ideal. If you are unable to re-plant stick them in BIG pots with loam/soil NOT potting compost and these will be fine and you can then plant out next year as and when the space becomes available, they will live quite happily in a pot for a year or so....
