« on: November 11, 2011, 19:19 »
Hi could any one tell me how often you would apply calcified seaweed i have just done my allotment plot and i just wish to know how often to apply it thanks :)
Give me a sense of humor, Lord,
Give me the grace to see a joke,
To get some humour out of life,
And pass it on to other folk.
Happy new year to you all xx

There should be specific information on your package.

If not, a general rule of thumb is 500 grams per 4 sq M (12 ft sq). This seaweed needs application only every 3 or so years, but if you're growing for market gardening, you could apply it every year as you'll be doing a lot more cropping than the average home grower.

I normally apply about half that amount every year since my soil is clay.

Calcified seaweed is a conditioner not a fertilizer
There isn't much point adding it this time of year or it will be wasted
Most showers add it to there mix to help with the condition of their vegetables

Calcified seaweed is produced from naturally occurring beds of calcified and coralline algae. Some sources are more sustainable and renewable than others, so it is worth reading the product information or phoning the manufacturer for details of provenance. When used in the garden, calcified seaweed is an alternative to garden lime, with added trace elements and plant nutrients.

So it is like adding lime, but with the addition of trace elements :)
It's best to ph test your soil to see how much lime it actually needs.

Yes, I got massively confused on these seaweed products this year, when I was looking for stuff to improve my soil. But it seems that calcified seaweed is a neutralizer plus trace element feed, whereas seaweed meal is a soil conditioner plus trace element feed. And then there's liquid seaweed feeds, but that's another story :)
