Electric fencing...I have NO clue what-so-ever???
« on: November 09, 2011, 19:30 »
I'm looking for ways to secure my remaining chickens, but also need to be able to give them plenty of space. Their enclosure is roughly 13metres x 5metres, 3 sides have 6ft wooden fencing and the one side has waist height weldmesh and a wooden gate. Inside the run is their coop and secure run (6ft square), a wooden play house, 2 massive conifers and a huge oak.  All this needs making secure before I can even begin to think about letting them out alone to roam (the dog babysits them at the moment), but it needs doing as cheaply as possible...and I mean CHEAP
Would electric fencing be a viable option, instead of replacing the weld mesh and somehow enclosing the top, and it it a really good fox deterrent?
Many pets, a bloke and 2 kids....help!!!

There are lots of set ups about, I'm looking to invest in the spring but have no practical experience of running one at the moment.

Looking at something like this to run off the mains...

I'll be interested in the replies to this post too... From what I have read a properly installed and maintained electric net is very effective against the fox. I like the idea as the net looks less intrusive in the garden and won't spoil my rural vista!

Personally I think it is the best way to keep your chooks safe from predators. You do need to devise ways of keeping the grass down around the bottom of the fence to prevent it shorting out though. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Hi this is what I have recently done, fenced off area and then ran three wires top one about 1 foot off ground then ran current through these, its far cheaper than netting and has worked so far (touch wood) evidence of him getting a shock and scarpering, because the fox leads with his nose I think this should be enough to keep him at bay, also extended wire netting up but kept it loose so he shouldn't want to attempt to climb as its wobbly, paving slabs down as well. The fox came over a 6foot solid fence so make sure you take that into consideration when securing your area.  :)
