Help on Raspberries needed please.
« on: November 07, 2011, 18:24 »
I have never grown Raspberries before and need to know if 40 Autumn fruiting canes is a big crop?? How many lbs of fruit should it produce? I havent got a clue.. I want to make jam and jelly from them.. possibly mix with Blackberries and Damsons as well for a bit of variety...

Also what are the laws if any on selling home made jam on boot sales etc..? Just another idea of mine.
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..

I'm no good at estimating yields, but laws on selling and labelling of home made jams are quite stringent...I'm sure there's a thread some where

If I can find it............. I'll be back  :D

Here it is  ;)

It's really hard to guesstimate yield from plants because too many factors are at work: pests in your area, amount of sun available, water, feed, soil type, any diseases floating around, proper pruning, variety, etc.

40 canes should give you a reasonable yield regardless.

Not sure on quantities either mate but you should get a decent yield off 40 canes, if your just planning on selling off a few surplus jars of jam at a carboot sale I would worry to much about the laws and labelling,  however if you want to sell on market commercially it's something you'll have to consider...........and you'll probably have to times your 40 canes by 10 to make any money lol

To give you an idea...
This year i have 6 fruiting Joan J (autumn fruting raspberries in their second year) and i have between one and 2 lb of fruit a week between the begining of August and the middle of october. I did pamper them and gave them huge amounts of pot ash and well rotted manure but i think 40 canes will give a really serious amount of fruit!!
Kate
Always thankful for advice!

Sorry baz but we are strict on here about not condoning the breaching of rules or other laws.  Please don't do it again  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
