ths year my tomatoes started wonderfully but when the fruit reached the size of a golfball they went dark brown and the plant died, any ideas anybody  :(

Most likely blight, especially if the plants were grown outdoors.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
