True British Garlic
« on: October 27, 2011, 09:09 »
Hi!  I was watching a show last night about how wonderful true British garlic is but I don't know what variety to plant now.  Does anyone know of a variety that isn't imported from France or Italy?  Thanks!  Can't afford that Elephant Garlic, but it sure is beautiful!  :)
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

Doesn't she have the bluest of eyes ? ! ? !  ::)   I've obtained Britsh garlic from the Garlic Farm and I asked for types of garlic that doesn't have those fiddly small slim cloves in the middle.  The ones they sent (after growing) have about 6 - 8 really big cloves and no fiddly ones.  Trouble is I've forgotten the variety name.          Cheers,    Tony.

Thanks everyone!  Evidently, British garlic goes in now and is harvested in May/June.  Works for me!  And I know exactly what you mean when you say little fiddly bits.  I'll check out The Garlic Farm.  Not sure if they sell planting bulbs or not, but I love snooping around in places like that!   ;)

My Mum bought some Elephant Garlic from the IOW several years ago and has done very well from planting it so not sure what the difference is buying it for growing as opposed to eating.....

We don't get shows like that over here, but I hope they mentioned that all garlic originated from Siberia and found its way around the world. Hence the reason why garlic prefers cold weather.

Music is a variety grown in many long summer areas of the world, and is very reliable.

Elephant garlic is actually part of the leek family and is quite tasteless if you're looking for garlic flavour.

I checked out The Garlic Farm and they DO have seed garlic - British varieties.  I remember on the show that they said the red varieties are hot - a real kick to them.  Wouldn't that be fantastic in relishes and pickles?

I have no doubt that the garlic here came from Siberia.  Most of our winter's brutal weather comes from there and it's not that far away!
