parsnip prob
« on: October 16, 2011, 22:45 »
Just wondering why my parsnip leaves are looking bit frazzled? Bit yellow/ dry in parts... is that normal or should they be a healthy green at this stage?

Mine are the same and I think they are too dry at the roots, the soil is like dust here.....don't know about where you are though

Mine have been less vigorous than in previous years despite using the same variety, soil preparation and sowing/thinning/feeding techniques so I guess it must be down to the weather (probably too dry for too long.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Parsnips do lose their leaves as winter approaches, so make sure you know where they are so you can dig them up when you want them  :D

I too grow parsnips.  Although this year is the first time where I've got lots of green tops, which are well over a foot high.  I'm not worrying yet, but hopefully, its not going to be too much top and not enough down-under - only time will tell.  Usually they too have been yellowing and dying off, which is normally, and completely ignore them until the 'snips have had a good frost at them :D

I'm the same here in Northampton. Last year I had a crop of very big parsnips and I do mean big. This year they appear to be the size of carrots. Very disappointed; and like you the preparation was the same as last year. However, the weather has been  even dryer than last year.

I know its early and we havent had any frosts yet but I pulled a few at the weekend because the tops had almost completely died off. The roots were perfect under the soil. Nice and clean and when cooked were delish. Roll on first frosts. :D :D

Thanks for the reassurance! Im waiting for the frost too... maybe a month if Im lucky Or unlucky! I grow some at home in a sandy raised bed and some at school in clay (somewhat improved) The first one i pulled at home was a foot long, and the 3 we pulled for the Harvest assembly at school were squatty and curly shapes... No surprise there!
