salt to stop keel slugs
« on: October 16, 2011, 19:40 »
as the littel beggers have run amoke this year i need to do some thing next year.
i remember some one telling me that the right amount of salt scatted in the spring keeps most of them out.

is this right? and whats the right amount?

many thanks CW

Yes, my main-crop spuds are ruined by them. I'd be delighted if it's as easy as using salt in the soil

I think salt would dissolve very quickly and I'm not convinced it's any good for your soil in quantities.

I'd consider using nematodes - not particularly cheap but are said to be effective.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I am going to give nematodes a whirl next year too.  My potatoes were alright, but they have been chomping at my cabbage and my squash a bit.  The worst affected though was my lettuce, especially Webb's Wonder.

I've not used nematodes myself, but you water them into the soil - don't know how far down they go.  Others who have used them may be able to comment.

Yes I believe they will.  The only drawback is the cost.
