Weevils in my corn
« on: October 13, 2011, 19:02 »
Today I found thousands and thousands of weevils in my chickens corn!   They are invading my house!   They are just everywhere!   They seem to have all hatched at once and I am not sure what to do!   Please please has anyone else had this problem?  Do I tip the lot away?  Seems a terrible waste!   Any advice would be most welcome  :(

You may need to replace the corn or use some Diatomaceous Earth in the feed bin.  Good luck with the eradication and keep us posted.  If you type red mite into the search box in the top right hand corner.  Good Luck and keep us posted.

Oh darn!  :(

As far as I know weevils aren't harmful to chickens, so in that respect they shouldn't be a problem... but if they are in your human food as well then that's not good!  Is your chicken food stored inside your house, near the human food?

If this was me, I would move the chicken food out of the house, into a rodent-proof storage bin of some sort.  Then I would empty every container of dry food out of the pantry and clean out the pantry and all storage containers.  It seems like a sad waste of food but the only way you'll get rid of them is to do it all at once.

Diatomaceous Earth is a good idea.  I've sprinkled it under my pantry and behind the fridge and it seems to have dealt with my ant problem.  It can be added to poultry feed so if you stir some into the feed it might keep numbers down.

Thank you for your help... will deffo try the Diatomaceous Earth... No, corn was not stored near the kitchen, but in the laundry area... no food nearby... but they got into the bathroom closeby and in the hall!  All sealed in a plastic bag at the moment... outside!! until I get some DE.... At least I can sleep tonight knowing I have a plan for the little beasties tomorrow..
