A Touch of Diarrhoea - I'm a bit concerned
« on: October 09, 2011, 09:08 »
Hi There

As I posted the other day, I picked up my very first chooks on Thursday.

They've settled in beautifully and one of them will eat out of my hand already!  I love them to bits already and have spent the past few days just standing there watching them.

Anyway, I went out this morning to let them out of their coop.  They came out and started pottering around but then Phyllis (my Sussex  Star) had a bit of a "loose" poo which has me a little bit worried.

I've got the run covered in children's play bark and she does spend a lot of time scratching around and picking up bits to eat so could it be the bark that's upsetting her tummy, or possibly just a change in food from what the farmer was feeding her to the layers pellets that I've bought?

I've checked her vent and it seems all nice and clean and she's as busy and bossy as ever - eating and drinking OK

Am I just a new Mum worrying over nothing?

Hello Skywise,
It doesn't sound like too much to worry about.  If you look in the Poultry FAQs you will find a link to pictures of chicken pooh, some that is normal and some that isn't.  Bet you never thought you'd spend time looking at chicken pooh  :)

Thanks for the link kegs - I've checked through the pics and it looks like a coecal (sp) dropping.  Phew!

You're right bantam novice- I never, in my wildest dreams, thought I'd be stressing over chicken poo  :D
