I'll be keeping my 4 chooks in a largish daytime pen most of the time, with occasional free ranging when I'm in the garden with them; but for the odd w/e away I'll be keeping them in a fully enclosed run attached to their house. (A neighbour will feed etc and shut the pophole at night).

Do you think a fully enclosed run of 8ft x 3ft x 3ft will be big enough for 4 chooks for the occasional couple of days? (And probably on the rare occasion I'm out for the day and not expecting to be back till late).

Just about to start the carpentry, but need to aim for a size I can move around fairly readily.

8*3 ft = 2.6sq yards and is about right for 1 LF hen when you take into consideration space for feed and waterers.

At a push you could keep 2 in there over a weekend, but I really wouldn't want more than that.

DEFRA state a minumum of 1sq m per chicken (and that is for meat birds which tend not to move around too much).

2, as long as the run is moved frequently, should be ok.
