Drowzy chook, head falling to one side !!
« on: September 23, 2011, 13:11 »
HELP!! My 14 week old poland bantam his acting very weird! She was first out of the coop this morning, all seemed fine. Did my usual daikly checks on all of my birds, didnt pick up on anything untowards.
However, about an hour ago I noticed my little blue Poland was turnign her head right round to one side (rather excorsist style) and seemed very dozy. I've been keeping a close eye on her and she is going down hil fast!!
She is now constantly layng down, her head keeps dropping to one side and occasionally she has her beak open.
I have seen her eat today, however I've not noticed her drink (may have missed it as been n and out of house and garden all day) She joined in at mid morn treat time with great gusto, dozen grapes and 4 tomatoes shared between 7 birds. It was after this she started acting strangely, within about 20 mins or so.
Could it be over indulgance on the fruit, she seems alomost "drunk" or should I be looking out for another explination!
I'm frightened to bits it's something serious - she's my fiances bird! He's due home tonight and would be devistated if she was ill! She is the darling of the house!!!

It's hot and sunny today, could she just be having a good old relax. Hens often luxuriate in the sun and spread out, sometimes in an alarming fashion with their legs and wings stretched out.

You say she guzzled some grapes. Also that she has her beak open. Could she have something stuck.   Have a look as best you can

If she is ill she will be very floppy in your hands when you pick her up.  If you're really worried I would whip her off to the vet sharpish as quick intervention could save her life

Update! But firstly must say sorry for my terrible spelling in myorig  topic piost! I was in such a state about our little Luci!! (oh dear back to school for me!)
Good news - trip to fantastic poultry vet and ta da - diagnosis - concussion!!!  No sign of any infection/virus. Perfectly healthy little chook apart from a bang on the head!
Apparently Polands are prone to this and at times to completely knocking themselves out due to the fact they have thinner skulls than most chooks. So the huge feather "crash helmets" they all sport are no use as a safety device!
So after a weekend in chicken 5 star hotel (cat box, double thickness straw, sleeping in the bedroom!!! masses of fuss and a whole garden to herself at my fiances house) she's now back with the rest of the girls and our boy tearing round my garden and merrily dust bathing under the deck!
Hurrah! Normality and chaos returns! :)

That is just brilliant news. Who would have thought that a chook could get concussion. But then again, a baby hawk flew into our front door 2 years ago and knocked itself out for a while, so why not chooks.
So glad that she is better. A great start to the week!!
