You know what its like in winter. You got to get on the plot, but the soil is cold, tacky, and wet.
Walking on it will compact and may damage the structure for later in the season.
A portable path is the answer, but they can be so expensive.
So try this.Take some old plank wood or those planks from a pallet, and cut them so that they are 4"x 6"(10cm x 15cm) Approx.(If you have got hold of some really good hard wood you can make the steps wider.)
Then drill a hole in each corner, about 1.3cm from the edge.(If you are ok on measuring, mark the size out and drill first then cut.Its a bit quicker.)
Lay them out like a tank track, and carefully wire them together. If you prefer you can avoid drilling them by using strong parcel binding tape and just laying that along both edges and one strip in the middle for strength, and just staple it on to the wood. Two staples at least per side, three would be better.Angle the staples to avoid splitting the wood.
Its better to make two middle size Paths then one long one so that they are not too heavy or awkward to use.
You can also use very strong string, but its best to use at least a double layer, and to staple it well.
Once made you will wonder how you ever got along without them
Some poor village is missing its Idiot
plus officially the longest ever occupier of the naughty step.

you know how they say a picture is worth a thousand words - well, have you got a photo of one?

sounds like a really good idea. had intermittent heavy showers today. Now, my soil is a silty clay/loam and when it rains hard, it puddles on the top then slowly sinks in. Was planting onion sets when the heavens opened. Sheltered in the shed waiting for it to stop, walk outside and the top inch or so of soil was mud which adhered to the soles of my feet leaving relatively dry earth underneath. nearly went a over t a few times. So yeah, i'll make one

 :)

The impossible we can do at once. Miracles take a little longer!

I though a simple drawing showing a rolling path.So that anyone can see how they are put together.

Just imagine the pickets from a fence laid down flat then some wire stapled to them.

I'd suggest chicken wire or sheep fencing instead of strands of wire.  And lay it on TOP so that you have a non-slip surface.
