Liquid fertiliser, chapter forty-three...
« on: September 17, 2011, 06:28 »
I've been using this for most of the year, and as reported by Azubah, there was a neighbour with swede the size of footballs, through using the stuff.

We've got the same result on swede, but although the carrots and parsnips have big crowns, some over 5 ins across, I know damn well that they've forked underneath the surface, and I'm pretty sure the liquid fert just didn't reach the tap root at a time when it should have done.

So they're odd sideways shapes, but still fine to use (and clear of fly which is surprising...)

I think it's helped the leeks though, as they collected the stuff in their folds, and maybe it worked as a foliar feed of sorts. These bulbs are going well, and about 1.5 ins across (some of them).

It also seems to picked up the raspberries as well; some of them are enormous. And also runner beans had a field day, although the peas just smouldered and sulked...

And it's done very little for the chard, but that's quite recently planted.

Your forked roots will probably be due to watering little and often so that the water stays in the top few inches, and so do the roots. This will happen when applying liquid fertiliser.

Carrots are probably better off with no water or fertilizer. If you do water give them a real drenching but be carefull once the carrots are a decent size as it can make them split, as can heavy rain after a dry spell.
