Moulting
« on: September 13, 2011, 07:47 »
My 2 new girls that I have had for 2 1/2 weeks (POL Speckledy - she started laying 4 days ago!! and Sussex, not laying yet) they are quite young looking, and easily spooked, quite timid.... they are still separate from my 2 bigger girls (but can see each other)

There are white feathers about the place - I have noticed 2 tail type feathers (heavy black tip and white bottom part), and a handful of small fluffy white feathers in the run and this morning some in the house.

Is she starting to moult even though she is so young, or is this normal, and just more noticable because she is white (big girls are ISA Browns)?

There is no bullying going on from the Speckeldy - I have been keeping and eye, and havent even seen a peck when I am giving them a little treat, or at the food etc

Thoughts anyone?

Could she be getting her final set of adult feathers from being a chick?  I know when I hatched some Light Sussex by 14 weeks old their run looked like someone had a pillow fight in there!  I guess it depends just how old she is as POL can vary so much from supplier to supplier.

yes, and some breeds have their last moult at about 20ish weeks too, my Araucanas do, and then they begin laying.  I dont think it is anything to worry about, they do look just like they've had a pillow fight like Foghorn said!
