Do Pullets need water overnight?
« on: September 20, 2011, 10:38 »
I've just moved my 6 week old pullet table birds to their new coop and I'd like to know whether I'm meant to leave water in the coop for them overnight?  I hadn't wanted them to spill or mess in their drinker so I haven't been leaving it in there but this morning they ran out of the coop and rushed to their drinker gasping for water so I wonder if I made the wrong decision.  Thanks.

They should be fine without it at night, all my hens make a beeline for a drink when they're first let out, bit like the first cuppa of the morning. :D

I assume you don't have lights in their new home?
And I assume you let them out as early as possible in the morning?
In which case they won't need water in their coop. :)

They'll be fine without overnight water provided they are let out reasonably early.

Mine can never decide whether to race for water or food on the first mad rush - but they all choose the same option: weird!  I'd go for food if everyone else was crowded round the drinker - but they don't think like humans.

Putting drinker in coop with restricted space & darkness tends to lead to spills, which leads to replacing more bedding.....
