Tomato query
« on: September 07, 2011, 16:18 »
My indoor tomatoes are doing well but the outdoor tomatoes are just doing nothing - they started well with plenty of flowers but have just ground to a halt.  :(  So I am looking for other posters opinions - should I hoike them out now so that I can plant green manures in the area that they are growing on or should I leave it for a while. Thank your for any advice.

No fruit at all? Might be time for the green manure. It's probably too late to expect too much now.

You did not indicate how many trusses you have on the plant.
I stop my outdoor plants at 3 or maybe 4 trusses.(they are not in pots). Indoors you would expect more.
At the moment they are mostly green but bulking up nicely. I don't expect the 4th truss to turn red and they are usually for the chutney pot.
This year has been awlful for toms. They did not get the growing weather in May and they are not getting the ripening weather now.
I would not discard yet. Reduce the number of trusses if applicable. You never know the rest of Sept/Oct may be hot 8)

Its not looking that way - well at least not here.

I'll be picking anything bigger than a marble off mine at the weekend and then its off to the compost bin. The recent winds haven't helped matters and I feel the GM would be of more benefit than 1 or 2 larger toms might be.

Hoike away I say.

Should have said on the original post - three of the plants are cordons which have two trusses of very green tomatoes which are of a reasonably good size - so I will probably just pull the toms off and try to ripen them indoors.

It is the bush toms that either have very small toms which look as if they are never going to grow any bigger or are still in flower.

Lardman's advice sort of follows what I was thinking and hoike them out I will.  :) :)
