any tips on soft shelled egg pecking?
« on: September 07, 2011, 09:12 »
My girls are all 16 weeks roughly and Ive had them 2 days. One of my hybrids is laying soft shelled eggs and its giving the others a taste for the insides!! Im worried that when she lays normal eggs all the others will peck it to pieces. Has anyone any tips on preventing this? or is it just one of those things that will sort itself out in time?  (the bird I suspect is laying these eggs has a messy vent, is this cause for concern?)

It is perfectly natural for them to eat soft shelled eggs - one reason is to hide any evidence, another is to get extra protein. Once she starts laying hard shells it should stop, if it doesn't then you could consider rollaway nest boxes.
Staffies are softer than you think.
