Things to do in September
« on: September 03, 2011, 12:50 »
I just stumbled on Alan Titmarsh's website where he has jobs to do in September.

He says: Sow onions either from seed or from sets. They fill space in the veg patch and form the basis of most winter stews & casseroles.

Plant spring cabbage plants for beautiful iron rich crops in March

I've never heard of putting in onion sets in autumn. Is this feasible and can you expect to grow?
Is it feasible to plant cabages now?

Thanks a lot. By the way, I just discovered Mr T brought out a new version of his allotment book and this one is called "How to garden: vegetables and herbs". Amazon shows the index and it seems to be much the same as my 30-year-old book. I'm thankful because my old friend is held together by rubber bands. I used it for my first allotment 30 years ago and I've grown very fond of it.

Isn't it a bit late to plant the winter onions now?

They've not been in the brochures for long, and they haven't had them in our Wilko yet, so no not too late....they won't ripen till June so there's really no hurry ;)

Our overwintering onion sets and garlic arrived at the lotty shop yesterday.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
