They kill both in my garden  ;)

yep mine too ;)

We have mutant snails then. I do find a high number of empty shells though.

That looks like earwig damage to me. I have the same problem (I am growing in a growbag and they are hiding inside in the crevices). Is there something I can tie around the base of the stem to prevent them from crawling up? Little pests!

Just checked my runner beans, yet again there were several earwigs all on the tender leaves happily munching away. Google seems to suggest that tuna cans full of oil and soy sauce does the trick. I have left 1 out for tonight and will report back on the results tomorrow (not before managing to tap three of the little pests into the tin before I went back inside.

Reporting back on this issue - the cans of oil and soy sauce didn't collect any extra earwigs, however I didn't notice any extra damage this evening. So perhaps the little "pests" (as I have been corrected  ;)) have been checked by me tipping them into a can of oil.

BTW - on my travels last night, I noticed a spider on my runner bean vine that was trussing up what looked like an aphid. When I see things like that, it make me pretty sure that non-chemical means of protecting my plants can be effective.

I've seen snails abseiling off brick walls  to get at a family member's runner beans which were  growing next to the wall. Slug pellets on ground below Clever little blighters.
Th earwig recipe sounds interesting - will remember that

The earwig recipe didn't work at all for me, not one earwig captured.

Another way to trap earwigs is to place an upturned plastic plant pot on a stick, fill it with hay, the earwigs go into it during the day, so remove it and tap them out - squash!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I think the problem is fixed by spraying the base of each plant with a 'bug' repellent spray.  Whatever-it-was has not returned to munch, and the leaders are now up the sticks by a couple of feet.  :)
