Kiwi plant
« on: August 11, 2011, 22:09 »
Can anyone help please?
We have a Kiwi plant bought from a local small garden centre, that is suppose to be self fertilising (so the label says), however after having it for five/six years it has yet to produce any flowers or fruits! The plant itself is healthy, nice big leaves, feed as required - don't know we are doing wrong - all advice welcomed

Hi, I also have purchased 2 kiwi plants this year but did not plant them against a trelis until mid June. I do not expect any fruit this year but the place I purchased mine said to feed with tomato food or something with high potash in.  I am not sure what you are feeding yours with, time will only tell if mine fruit next year.

Its had manure, tomato feed and as an extra measure some potash (not all at the same time)- perhaps we should get a female plant, but how can you tell?

Both male and female plants flower though, and you have had no flowers yet

I know that they can take four or more years before they do start flowering, and if your is self fertile it will then have both male and female flowers on it at the same.

Not sure if that helps, but if it is healthy I would give it a bit longer myself  :)

I think I've had my two (both self-fertile) for about 5 years now and still no flowers.  They do make a lovely display against a fence though - the leaves are huge with a red vein - very beautiful in spring/early summer.  Grow like crazy.
