They're here !!! HELP!!!
« on: August 01, 2011, 09:56 »
The Girls have arrived, they came last night, they seem to have settled in really well, opened the eglu this morning took about an hour'ish and they were all out feeding and drinking pecking about, it was really funny last night one of them found a worm, must be first time ever as they're bantam rir chicks around 14 week old ish, she was running around enclosure 'look what i've got, look what i've got'
Just one problem  :( where have all the flies come from in such a short time ?  and more importantly how do you get rid of them ?

Thanks for your help

I've mentioned flies recently myself and had it pointed out that:

warm weather + poo = flies

I think the only thing you can do is pick up the poo.

Good luck

you can buy things called red top fly catchers (shop around as the prices do vary) - you place these away from where your chickens are and the smell of the stuff inside attract the flies to - once in they cant get out  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

One unexpected benefit of flies:- we have had a pair of spotted flycatchers nesting in our garden since we have had the chickens. I can only assume that there is an increase in flies.
Thankfully not too much for us to notice but enough to encourage such charming birds into the garden.

Even though the flies can be a nuisance, there is nothing funnier than watching a hen dive bombing or jumping around like a maniac trying to catch a fly! I've even had them jump straight at the wall when after one.  :D

They dont run to show everyone the worm, they run to get chance to eat it before another hen steals it

I had seen my hens pecking at the air, didnt believe they were seriously going for flys though, silly things
We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended

Thanks for all your replies  :)

I have started poo picking its not that bad, and there's not too much all part of the territory  ;) the flies only seem to be around in the morning but not for too long either, but if they do become a nuisance i'll get a red top fly catcher been looking on internet like you recommended Joyfull and the chicks are funny chasing the flies
I've changed my profile picture to my girls, i need to work out how to put some more photos on  ::)
They've all settled in nicely and they love there new home i'm glad to say, and we love them been with us too  :D

A word of advice... if you get a red top fly catcher, don't have it situated near your house, especially if you spend any time outside... they STINK! ;)
