plums
« on: July 31, 2011, 19:26 »
Last night i was enjoying a pint of cider in my garden and noticed a guy across from me has a huge plub tree and loads of ripe plums on the floor rotting.....what i waste i thought to myself so i typed into google what can i do with plums and it came up with a receipe on this site for jam. I have been out and got some jars and decided to give it ago

I have just this minute plucked up the corage to ask the guy if i can have some of his plums and to my amazement he went to the tree and snapped a huge branch off the tree and said here you go

ok i will get to my question.....the branch i have just received (with about 200 plumbs on it) has a few purple plumbs and the rest are yellow/green

how can i now ripen these green/yellow ones? or can i use them for the jam anyway?
work smarter not harder

They would not necessarily be the same as the parent, they would probably grow too big ( most varieties are now grafted onto smaller growing rootstocks) and it would take years before they will fruit.

So all in all not the best of plans ;)

I just spent a fair bit of today making my celebrated 'Little Plum and Rowan Soor Jilly' out of rowan berries and the cherry plums off my tree.  Got a bit carried away - extracted nearly 4 pints of juice from the rowans and nigh on five pints from the cherry plums (and a couple of sour apples and a stick of green rhubarb).   Had to do it in two batches otherwise the jampan would have overflowed and Mrs HGB would have been unamused.

My favourite ingredient for jellies and jams is plums, especially the little ones.
Ripen your green and yellows - if necessary stash the currently ripe ones in the freezer (also means they break down dead easy when you do get round to processing them).  Always sets dead easy (at least for me) and a really grown up tangy taste to the finished product (todays currently languishing in 18 full size jars plus eight of the little 'hotel' size jars - as used by Mother in Law in vast quantities).

You can of course plant the stones as a voyage of cross-pollinated discovery but usually better to look under a neglected plum trree and rescue some of the self-seeded ones!    Same unknown but a lot quicker.
The Dales - probably fingerprint marks where God's hand touched the world
