We have got good results by growing them in an old water tank filled with bought compost. They don't have root fly and are easy to pull up with the fingers. The compost holds a lot of water which helps, too. You can grow a surprisingly large amount in such a tank if you sow them fairly sparingly and do not thin them out.

Mine were rubbish last year, I think the bunnies got to them, and this year I did not get any until this month.  I had a dinner party last week and served the first of my Early Nantes and we could not get over the taste, they were so sweet.
I have a couple of rows that are now filling out and I will keep going next year just for the taste.

For carrots to go to seed (they are biennial) means they really must be very stressed.

Perhaps cover them with enviromesh or net curtains to filter hot sun, or grow them somewhere slightly shadier.

When they are seedlings make sure they are regularly watered (all their growing lives if in a pot).

I have never had carrots go to seed until their second year.

Wow! That is unusual

When i took my allotment on a few years a go now, an old guy told me 'you'll never grow carrots here lad' how right he was, complete waste of space no matter what i try.

I`ve got a large pot in my greenhouse full of foliage. Been looking after it all year. If there`s no carrots in there when I dig it out I`m going to shoot myself. :tongue2: :tongue2:
I can remember when it were all fields round `ere.
