hanging baskets foliage problem
« on: July 30, 2011, 21:02 »
hello :)

I have 4 hanging baskets at the front of my house which is north facing but its a bungalow on the side of a mountain so there is good light with some direct sunlight morning and evening.

The baskets are watered daily and fed weekly and dead headed regularly, all baskets are flowering very well but the greenery is quite sparse making the plants look quite leggy and sad, what can I do to encourage more foilage growth?

What are the greenery plants?  Sometimes, pinching out the leading stem will make the plant bush up nearer the root.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I would try pinching out the ends of the petunias, it'll stop them getting any longer and thus looking more leggy, and it should stimulate more growth from lower down the stems.

I doubt that is the problem, but nitrogen is the fertiliser for good leaf growth so you would look for a fertiliser with a higher first number in the N:P:K ratio which will be shown somewhere on the label.

Potash is what is needed to stimulate flowers.

Thanks Yorkie, I'll try a combination of pinching and nitrogen  ;)
