Wormeries?
« on: July 27, 2011, 14:56 »
Hi folks,

Does anyone on the forum have a wormery?  I quite interested in getting one and was looking for recommendations.  I've seen the Original Organics "Original Wormery", although not as pretty as some of the wooden ones, they use Tiger Worms and claim that they are the best.  I just wanted to find out about other peoples experiences and if you would recommend anything.

Thanks

Johanna

I've got the wood and marine ply and mesh, also the plans, but I havn't quite got  a round tuit yet.   Yet one more project 'on hold'.   ??? Gonna get the old motorbike out before the start of winter and give it a good going over.    ::) ::) ::) ::)     Cheers,   Tony.

I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I got one for my birthday from my OH. It is early days yet and can take up to 6 months to be 'properly working'

So far we are still on the first layer (it has 3 in total), but they are producing 'worm wee' which if diluted 1:10 is good tomato food.

Mine is from Wiggly wrigglers and is their worm cafe.

It is great for popping in small amounts of veg peelings etc without the trek down my garden to the compost bin (which is also chokka with worms). They can apparently have up to 250g per day of veg waste once they are 'up to speed'.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

My OH bought one for me for my birthday last November.  As it was cold, we started them off inside, but they do like to explore...... at least for a few days until they know where the food is.  We had a hilarious few days retrieving them from around the kitchen.  Boy, can they climb! :tongue2:

In the darkest days of Winter it was wrapped up well in the garage, but since early Spring it's been outside making lots of juice for plant food and quite a bit of rich compost, which also need diluting.   Very easy to look after now.  I would recommend one for the entertainment value if nothing else! ::)

I got an allotment in April this year and lo and behold - I was left an original wormery - a bit battered - but I thought I would give it a try. I brought it home and stuck it by my back door. Got in touch with the manufacturers and ordered a " re-starter" kit - about 150 worms -plus lime and compost - at £20 it is quite expensive - but hey ho - in for a penny.... Got the kit about May and followed the instructions - it was slow to start but seems to working now- had about one litre of liquid feed -( and some dead worms out of the tap - not sure about that !!) but the liquid feed has been applied to the beans and main crop potatoes with no adverse effects that I can see. I am now putting the content of my kitchen caddy into the wormery which seems to be working - no compost yet - but it is early days - and a bit of cardboard - toilet rolls etc - to soak up the moisture. One moan - the top seal has perished on mine - and I can not seem to buy a replacement - so I have a bit of fly problem - not too bad as it is outside - I have put  a strip of fly paper inside - but this controls them - not eliminates them . When you lift the lid just stand back from the warm for a few seconds before you look in.... Hope this helps ...

Years ago when the wheelie bins came in and I lived in a terrace, I fitted a tap on the old black bin, stuck a couple of bricks in the bottom with some geotextile over them to create a wet reservoir, and put all my kitchen veg waste in for 5 years. Got the brandling worms from underneath plantpots. Had one disaster when it all went sour and the worms died (pewwwwww) but apart from that it was easy and productive

A friend of mine has a diy version. Basically she got 2 large polystyrene boxes from an aquatics place (used to transport live things to the aquatics place i think)  She has one on top of the other and she bough the worms from ebay...she says it works fine after a vey slow start so maybe no need to go out and buy expensive stuff.

I have the original wormery, it has been going for about 3 years, with just the occasional top up of food from the kitchen caddy, lots of liquid feed which brings geraniums on a treat. no compost yet, but then I havent tried to empty it.

I had a fly problem so I got a fly sheet and hung it inside the bin and it cleared them up
