new and need help please
« on: July 27, 2011, 15:25 »
I excitedly brought my 5 new chickens home 11 days ago, they are 20 weeks old but I am having lots of teething troubles. One of the speckledy's began wheezing and struggling to breathe so I contacted the breeder who came and took her away saying she had had a heart attack and died soon after (that was 6 days ago) now my other speckledy has one eye half closed and isnt eating, she also has black spots on her crop, then to crown it all I noticed the orpington has worms in her poo, will it get any better? :(

send them all back and go to a different supplier is my advice - sorry. Either that or go to a vet and get them treated for a respiritory infection (I would say the first one probably did not have a heart attack but Myco - sometimes called stress disease) and your one with a puffy eye may have this too - all the birds will need treating. They also will all need worming with flubenvet.
Sorry you have had such a rough intro into chicken keeping  :(
Staffies are softer than you think.

The breeder said he would call round this afternoon to look at them, but I have my doubts about this as I have tried calling him several times but without any luck. The orpington and L sussex look really healthy and have started laying eggs so do you think they may be poorly to? My husband was really against me having chickens in the first place so I'm trying to sort this with out any bother to him  :( (but saying that he is fussing over them)

if they have a respiritory infection they will need antibiotics and you will need to treat all of your birds (even those who appear healthy - they could be in the incubation stage). Whilst on antibiotics you will not be able to eat the eggs, and you will need to take at least one with symptoms to a vet to get the A/B's. They should not come to you with worms and you will need to treat them all for this - Flubenvet is a recommended poultry wormer and again all of them will need treating for a period of 7 days.
