I have never grown shallots before but my daughter has started to go out with a chef so shallots have been added to the wish list for this year!  I am trying to decide how many sets to sow but I amnt't sure if the sets just grow into one shallot or do you get multiple shallots from each set?  If you get multiple shallots per set roughly how many do you get?  The bed they will be going into is still fairly wet and I am wondering if I can start them off in modules?  Finally how far apart do I plant them in the bed?

you get multiples per shallot sown. They like the same soil as onions, so try to delay if poss so ground can dry.

Five to eight shallots harvested per shallot sown. 15 sets gives around 100 shallots. More if you're lucky..

Yes, you can start them off in modules. I do it every year, well, I use empty 500g. Yoghurt pots.

Thanks everyone.  Glad I asked, the bag of sets I bought has 50 sets in it.  I will plant half of them and that should be more than enough, as I already have close to 300 onions.
