Growing Squash
« on: June 28, 2011, 12:25 »
I have previously grown courgettes with (average!) success. Last year I saved seed from a shop bought squash - spherical, green/yellow/orange and somewhat larger than a tennis ball. Some seeds have now germinated and are planted out.
Problem - I've no idea what the variety is , suggestions welcome. And has anyone an idea of the chance of success in open ground. I'm "up North" and about 700ft above sea level.

Squashes are notoriously 'permissive' and so it is very unlikely you will get fruit that coes true to type.

It will be a big surprise  :D

Cue photo?

Welcome to the forums NavyD. It would help if you could put your location in your profile, it'll save you have to tell us that you're Oop North!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

last year my most successful squash came from the seeds I dug out of a supermarket squash harequin.

Link

It grew much better than my expensive F1 hybrid butternut!

(Edited to shrink link which had broken the page!)

Harlequin is much easier to grow than butternuts, as butternuts are notoriously slow to flower and set fruit than other types of Winter squash.

Sounds like a gourd. Sorry.

Sunshine, heat is required. We do not know what up North exactly is. Here they do well in most summers, there are frequent exceptions though.

If your variety is F1, there are little chances for it to come true to type.

Sorry - as you see I'm new. I've now added "Nth Yorkshire". Do you think that's enough? It's about 100 miles wide. Maybe better to say North York Moors??
