Asparagus Bed
« on: July 22, 2011, 12:01 »
Have inherited an asparagus bed which looks like asparagus growing in a lawn!.How do I get rid of grass without disturbing the asparagus crowns etc. I grow "organically".Any advice would be appreciated

Welcome to the site.

Wait for the Asparagus to die back in winter and then remove the top 1inch layer of soil grass carefully, then top dress with around 4 to 6inch of well rotted manure.

The grass won't be able to re grow through the mulch but the Asparagus will, in removing the top layer of soil/grass the grass roots that are left will be so small and weak that they'll have no chance.
