phaelanopsis and provado
« on: July 09, 2011, 11:33 »
I have mealy bugs on some of my orchids and haven't been able to clear them with the usual 'meths on a paint brush' trick.

Does any one know if it is safe to use provado ultimate bug killer on them? it just says ornamental plants on the label, and doesn't mention not to use it on orchids.

I'd rather ask than risk losing the plants.

I don't know the answer but could you not just squish the bugs to reduce the number of them?

They are deep in the leaf axils, so sadly, no  :(

I'd have thought orchids would come under the heading of ornamental plants but don't know for sure.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I've used it on orchids before so you should be fine Sunshine, but try not to let the Provado run down into the leaf axils as liquid gathering down there can rot the heart of the plant.

Have you got the aerosol version - that's the most effective against mealy bug and as it is an aerosol, its easier to get a really light coating.  I know you probably would anyway, but best to take the plants outside before spraying  :)

Thank you for that reassurance, New Shoot

I don't have the aerosol spray but can get in with a good squirt I hope. I shall drain them upside down so hoefully they won't rot in the middle

(and outside  ;)  :) )

  You'll be OK with the ready to use liquid gun.  I only said because I merrily went spraying houseplants with an aerosol at work one morning before opening up and of course because it is a much finer spray, got a face full when someone opened the shop doors for a delivery and let a draft in  ::)  Quick dash to ladies to wash face followed. Didn't do me too much harm ............ though some might say it would be hard to tell

Outside, you can make sure you are up wind  ;)
