I read how to do this in a garden magazine;

Make a long loop of string and hang it up. Attach an onion or garlic bulb to the very bottom by twisting the long dried stem through the middle of the loop and around a couple of times.

Then put each bulb stem through the middle of loop and around one side of the string loop and over itself, working your way up to the top.

Leave all the stems uncut until you have finished leaving a couple of inches.  :)

I'll be practising this at the weekend. The shallots have been airing for 5 days now out of the recommended (where we read) 7. :)

I start with 3 and use their stems and plait them adding in another like you would add in hair if you are french plaiting.  It does help if you have someone to hold the bottom three just until you have the plait started. Once I get them all plaited in, I tie a bit of string found the top with a loop on and hang them on a nail in my kitchen.  I don't grow loads becuase I only have a little garden but they have lasted until January hanging there.

You don't have to plait them at all, it's not essential. I hang mine in onion bags or just lay them flat onto wire racks etc

That sounds easier CQ, but a plait would look nice and as Debz says, it would last ages too hanging alongside the Ristra, although I think there will be more than one of those this year! :D

me too - stick them in an onion bag - far too much messing about for me. Totally agree they do look nicer though

cadge a pair of tights (or stockings  ;) )
drop an onion into the toe & tie a knot, repeat until leg is filled, repeat with other leg. then just hang them somewhere cool and dry. (the kitchen is probably not a good idea :lol:)
when you want an onion cut through just above the onion you will use :)

I use the method suesoseed found in a mag',  but I don't wind the stem around the string ABOVE the onion, I wind it round BELOW and then press the onion down onto the stalk.
This way the weight of the onion holds the stem in place while you sort out the next onion.   Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !
