Weird plants
« on: July 09, 2011, 16:51 »
I feel silly posting this, but i'm a bit perplexed... My 3 courgette plants have started flowering, and one is producing almost only double flowers, meaning that at the top of the stem there are two blossoms instead of one. I thought it was just a weird plant, but now I noticed that a second one has a couple of those double flowered stems. They are a different variety, and I used the same batch of seeds last year without seeing anything like this.
Today, I noticed that one of my cabbages has started heading, and, you guessed, it's seems to have two heads.
Is this normal??? Have you seen anything like this before? Is there something weird in my soil? Will the cabbage be OK as is, or should I remove one head?

I've seen the 2 headed courgette flowers before, and have some this year.
I've never seen a 2 headed cabbage before though..........are you sure another plant hasn't germinated next to the first one

The two headed cabbage could have resulted from damage to the growing point when the plant was small. No worries there, it is a normal response from the plant  :)

I've never seen the double flower thingy you menton but if MoS has got some too, it might be an environmental issue and not too serious  :)

There isn't some sort of dodgy nuclear plant next to your plot is there........?

As MoS says, two flowered courgettes are pretty well run of the mill - but if the two headed cabbage isn't two germinating close together then perhaps it could be the initial growing core eaten and you are seeing the rare brassica equivalent of side shoots.

On mine it's only the male flowers that are doubled, but that means more pollen I s'pose :)

No double courgettes - they're all male, and anyway it forks after the stem, not before. Still, I should have more for courgette flowers fritters, so if it keeps going like this I might save the seeds from the plant that's producing so many twins and try to see if the trait is inherited!
I checked the cabbage, and the plant is definitely only one. We'll see how it goes...

Isn't that when you get a wide flattened stem?
