What can I plant now?
« on: July 06, 2011, 18:56 »
Having at last got my allotment after a long wait, I have been lucky to get one that has had a lot done for this year, the holder has given it up due to house move, ( lucky me ).

So there being ground prepared for planting my question being what can I sow/plant now? or I am I too late for most veg.

Any advice for a newby will be much appreciated.

Lucky you!
Have a look at this sowing/harvest chart
http://www.allotment-garden.org/vegetable/general/sowing-harvest-vegetable-chart.php

and have a look in the garden centres for some autumn and winter cabbages and broccoli/cauliflower plants that you can put in now (don't accept donations from other plot holders because you may import clubroot)

Its getting to the back end of the sowing season but try: -

Salad crops - Lettuce, Radish, Rocket etc.
Beetroot and if they don't grow big enough use the tops in salad.
Swiss Chard as per Beetroot.
Swede may give you a crop if the weather is favourable.
Runner Beans if you get them in quickly and again if the weather is favourable.
Dwarf French Beans.
Kale - Cavolo De Nero will be fine.
Turnip - Purple Top Milan or Golden Ball
Spinach
Cabbage - Duncan, Hispi etc.
Various quick growing herbs - parley, coriander etc.
Later on Garlic for next year harvesting
Winter onions for early summer next year harvesting.

See if you can get hold of some veg plants like cabbage, Brussel Sprouts, Broccoli from a local garden centre.

Probably best to start most things off in pots / trays in ideal conditions in order to give them a good start.

There you go your plots full :)

Good Luck

In our corner of the site we have a standing joke "Homebase got a sale on again" hahahaahhaha It might be worth taking a look and seeing what else you can get we picked up a few cheap plants at the end of last season.  Where are you i think we have a longer growing season in the SE and as it took longer this year to get going in think it will last a little longer too. ;)
Thanks
Kris
